Straw poll triumph boosts Herman Cain
Herman Cain, the former head of Godfather Pizza and republican presidential prospect, has told a reporter that he has considered dropping out of the contest -- two times. He garnered the top spot Saturday in Florida "Presidency Five" straw poll Saturday, and now states he is here to stay. Got more votes than everyone
Cain received about 37 percent of the votes, beating out the front-runner, Texas governor Rick Perry, who received only about 15 percent of the 2,657 votes. Many saw the success as more of a blow to Perry than a win for Cain, following Perry's poor showing in the Republican prospect debate on Sept. 22.
Comments from Cain
Cain imagined of it as a triumph. He defended himself easily.
“It’s not a protest vote,” Cain said on NBC’s “Today” show. "The voice of the people is more powerful than the voice of the media."
Two times he thought about stopping
Cain spoke about the victory while saying he almost quit the campaign two times prior to the straw poll success occurred, in an interview with Chris Moody of Yahoo! News.
"The thing that I've learned about myself in this campaign -- because I've never had this happen to me before on a single challenge -- is that I've gone to the brink, ready to pull the plug, but came back, twice. I've only had two days where I personally felt, should I pull the plug? For different reasons. That's how frustrating a campaign can be."
GOP has no front-runner
The GOP tends to embrace members of the party that are running and then turn on them just as easily. It has made for a horrible campaign period. With the Tea Party dividing the party, a front-runner is now hard to discover. The candidates are all fighting too, which makes it hard for anyone to trust or like a candidate member. In this contest, the front-runner has changed multiple times. Perry was not the first in that place.
Parody on SNL presented
Actor Kenan Thompson played Cain in a recent SNL skit where he used the slogan “I will deliver” as a campaign slogan parodying the candidates past in the pizza business. It made Cain happy. He thought it was a humorous sketch.
"You may hear that last line in my next debate performance," Cain said on NBC’s “Today” show. "I loved that SNL spoof; it didn't offend me at all."
Two black men running
History could be made with the future election if Cain is nominated. There have never been two black men attempting to become president at the same time.
